Student went to bed with a cold and woke paralysed

A student who went to bed with a cold woke up paralysed after being struck down with a rare condition.

Alistair Summers, 19, woke to discover he had lost the power in his legs and was rushed to hospital where his conditions continued to deteriorate and by the end of the day he had lost all movement from the neck down.

He is now recovering at Castle Hill Hospital in Cottingham after being diagnosed with Guillian-Barre Syndrome, a rare disorder in which the nerves in the arms and legs become inflamed and stop working.

Mr Summers, who had been studying Spanish and business at the University of Hull, said: "It started out as a bad cold and then I was paralysed - it was a bit of a bad deal really.”

After feeling exhausted he took himself to bed but as he tried to get up the next morning he “collapsed on the floor” and his friends took him to hospital.

Doctors diagnosed him almost instantly and told him he would spend the next fortnight bed-bound.
